Art

"Every child is an artist.  The problem is how to remain an artist once he grows up" - Pablo Picasso

Our Vision for Art

At St Scholastica’s Catholic Primary School, we believe that art allows our children to be creative, imaginative, and inventive. We believe that through the study of different artists and the progressive nature of our curriculum, our pupils become equipped with the skills and knowledge necessary for them to express responses to ideas and experiences. Ultimately fuelling their imagination.

Being an Artist at St Scholastica’s:

  • Children produce creative work, exploring their ideas and recording their experiences.
  • Pupils will become proficient in drawing, painting, sculpture and other art, craft and design techniques.
  • Children will learn to evaluate and analyse creative works using the language of art, craft and design.
  • The curriculum will help children to know about great artists, craft makers and designers, and understand the historical and cultural development of their art forms
  • Through drawing, painting, and sculpture, they learn a variety of techniques and ways to express themselves.
  • Pupils will learn to use their experiences and ideas from a range of artists as the inspiration for their own artwork.

How Art is taught at St Scholastica's

Supported by Kapow Primary’s revised Art and design scheme of work, we have adapted the scheme of work to meet the needs of context. We aim to inspire pupils and develop their confidence to experiment and invent their own works of art. Our scheme is written by experts in their field and designed to give pupils every opportunity to develop their ability, nurture their talent and interests, express their ideas and thoughts about the world, as well as learning about art and artists across cultures and through history. Our scheme supports pupils to meet the National curriculum end of key stage attainment targets and has been written to fully cover the National Society for Education in Art and Design’s progression competencies as well all the areas required in the National Curriculum.
