Our Vision for Physical Education (PE)

The PE programme at St. Scholastica’s strives to provide a broad and balanced curriculum that offers opportunities for everyone to enjoy participating in sport.  We want all pupils to acquire the essential knowledge and abilities needed to flourish in a variety of physical activities.

Our inclusive physical education curriculum will guarantee that pupils of all skill levels can participate in the variety of activities we provide and that they are physically active for extended periods of time. It also helps foster the growth of several key social and cognitive abilities, including communication and teamwork and as well as decision-making and evaluation of themselves and others.

The pupils are engaged in a variety of intra-school activities and can take part in inter-school competitions.

PE can help pupils develop their personal qualities, which can impact how they feel about learning and school. When physical education and school sports are provided at the highest level, every student will, to the best of their abilities, acquire and display the following character traits:

  • A great drive to advance and learn.
  • Great commitment, attendance, and participation in physical education and school sports.
  • Extreme dedication to physical education and school sports.
  • Good levels of positive behaviour such as politeness, fair play, and respect.

How PE is taught at St Scholastica's

The development of the Physical Education Curriculum has been built under the core principles and values of the school along with the aims from the National Curriculum. We use a program from PE Planning who help develop lesson plans and help our long-term plans for Sport in our school.

From Early Years and Key Stage 1, children are provided with the opportunity to develop their fundamental skills movement skills as well as play in small-sided team games which promotes and develops their confidence and competence in their agility, balance, co-ordination and use of space. Children will also develop and master basic movements such as running, jumping, throwing, catching and develop the skills needed to play in team games which will help them as they progress to Key Stage 2. Throughout the year, opportunities for play both indoors and outdoors will ensure that children will develop further core strength, stability, balance, spatial awareness, co-ordination, agility and explore the requirements for increasing control and balance.

In Key Stage 2, the knowledge they have learnt and developed from previous years is used and built upon in much more depth. Children will learn to refine their techniques needed to sprint, change direction and reaction times in games. They will also learn more complex rules in team games and communicate effectively when working as a team. They will gain a much deeper understanding of tactics and develop their own strategies when playing games which involve attacking and defending. In sports such as gymnastics and dance, pupils will create their own complex sequences involving a range of actions and use skills and techniques which show their precision and control.

Throughout each Key Stage, pupils will gain a better understanding of ways in which they can become healthier and lead healthier lifestyles while engaging in Physical Education at St. Scholastica’s.

Quality Physical Education can develop the whole child by:

  • Strengthening thinking and decision-making skills
  • Building and increasing confidence and self-esteem
  • Developing character and resilience
  • Enhancing their commitment and desire to improve
  • Allowing opportunities for enjoyment, fun and to be free-spirited
  • Fostering feelings of safety and security

Being an Athlete at St Scholastica’s

Being an athlete at St. Scholastica’s Primary School means embracing the values of sportsmanship, teamwork, and personal growth. Our young athletes are encouraged to always:

  • Strive to be the best they can be, both in their athletic abilities and in their character.
  • Not focus on winning, but on fostering a positive attitude, resilience, and respect for others.
  • Learn the importance of effort, perseverance, and support one another.
  • Make their journey as athletes a rewarding experience that extends far beyond the playing field.

Sporting Trips and Workshops

We are proud to be partnered with the Hackney Schools Athletics Association (HSAA), which provides a yearly programme of various sporting events and competitions throughout the academic year. These include a range of activities such as football, cross country, and orienteering, all of which our school actively participate in. In addition, we take part in a diverse array of Young Hackney sporting events, including everything from dodgeball and basketball to SEND-inclusive events, ensuring that all pupils can engage in competitive sport and physical activity.
